Escape to Victory

by Andy on 4/16/2004

In a bizarre re-hash of the Prisoner of War movie ‘Escape to Victory’ (starring Sylvester Stallone and Pele among others) nine members of Afghanistan’s national football team have absconded on their first tour of Italy.

Five of the missing players have been rounded up over the last few days – one of them at the Swiss border, on a train bound for Germany (The Great Escape, anyone?). The other four are still missing.

Fortunately the Afghan manager still had just enough players remaining to put together a team who, although they didn’t manage to emulate the victory of Stallone’s team (they lost 5-0 to Verona), did their country proud.

The match was held for charity – the proceeds were to go toward the cost of some new medical centres. Sadly, it looks like this might be the last charitable outing of Afghanistan’s national team for quite some time.
