Uzbek Imam Denounces Suicide Bombings

by Laurence on 8/26/2004

Hidden away on the Eurasianet website today, there is a long and interesting interview with Anvar hoji Tursunov, chief imam of the city of Tashkent, who said that suicide bombing is wrong, with these words, “Leading Muslims astray and urging them to take a villainous path is an act of a satanic people.” The interview is translated from Hurriyat by the BBC, with some omissions. While many will dismiss his statments as merely government-sponsored “official Islam,” it is interesting to see references to the Koran and the Hadith in support of reconcilation and peaceful coexistence. Here’s a sample:

Only God is entitled to decide on what is right and what is wrong. If
they [religious groups] issue an order on their own will saying that
something is not in line with shari’ah – even though this does not
exists in the religion – this would mean that they are claiming
themselves to be a god. They should be cautious about this and repent.
Due to their lack of knowledge and ignorance they are dancing to other
people’s tune and are parroting things they do not know.

Those who are blowing themselves up are also not aware of what they are
doing. They are not aware that the illusion they consider to be Islam
has nothing to do with the holy religion on the ground. They became
puppets on the string of jealous people who are hiding somewhere.
