What’s on Uzbek TV: Foreign Cinema

by Anonymous on 10/5/2004 · 2 comments

After two weeks of watching Uzbek TV, I can say that there are a lot of Japanese cartoons and cultural programs, there is a Korean soap opera, famous with Uzbek audience.

From Western films, there is a French detective serial, a Latinoamerican soap opera, and from time to time there are American films featuring family values, friendship and other innocently good qualities. In those films, even longer kissing scenes are cut out. I am not sure that Sharon Stone with her “Basic instinct” will be welcome in the Uzbek TV.

So, after this I understood why there are so many Asian films and cartoons on the TV.

As for viewers, young generation wants more liberal policies on the TV, in fact, the Uzbek TV is losing a lot of its audience to Russian channels (together with advertisement money), because of its overconservative position, especially in what concerns the discussing and broadcasting culturally taboo topics. However, the older generation approves of Uzbek TV’s broadcasting policy.

Alisher, we have something like this in the USA, where HBO shows more “edgy” programs on cable than broadcast television permits. CBS network was recently fined half a million dollars for showing Janet Jackson’s breast during the Super Bowl–but some cable networks show pornographic movies every night… The theory is that TV comes free over public airwaves, so anyone can see it, while cable is private, and so you have to pay for what you want. It seems to work out somehow.

The family Nathan stayed with gleefully watched the Simpsons on Russian TV. Not sure if this would be on Uzbek channels. Interestingly Japanese programs are becoming more popular on American cable TV, if they are outrageous enough.
