is Askar Akayev? The State Department says they can’t confirm he fled:

State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said he cannot confirm reports that President Askar Akayev had fled, and said the United States is not backing any opposition candidate.

Defense says the same thing.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Thursday he could not verify that the president of Kyrgyzstan had fled the country.

“I have been following reports in the press and in intelligence reports and the intelligence reports do not verify what you say in those press reports,” Rumsfeld said during a visit to Guatemala.

The only statement of any kind that I’ve read coming from Akayev today (and please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m a bit flustered today between following this and stuff at work) is an indirect one through Felix Kulov and other opposition leaders.

i tried to post this once but i don’t think my comment ever made it through for some reason so i’m going to pose this as a question first before going into detail: did my comment about akaev’s secret yurt on the outskirts of tokmok ever go through on this site? i doubt he’s there but you never know…everyone knows it’s outside of tokmok but no one knows exactly how to get there…only a few and i had the priv. of visiting it for a party as it was rented out or lent to a important figure in tokmok and i was invited to attend…
