A Russian View of the Domino Theory

Ferghana.Ru republished this analysis by Andrei Ryabov in Gazeta.ru:

Much more important than this similarity of scenarios is similarity of the reasons that lead to this dramatic finale. Contrary to the romantic expectations of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s that societies of prosperity and justice would be built, oligarchic regimes appeared in practically all post-Soviet countries. They set up “economy of prosperity” only for the few select and deprived the rest of the population of hopes for a better life. All attempts to restore justice through official channels were either ignored or cut short by the ruling elites. Energy of protest therefore was accumulating and waiting for its chance of finding an outlet into the open political struggle.
