The View From Kazakhstan

by Nathan Hamm on 3/28/2005

The Bloc of Democratic Forces For Fair Kazakhstan has released a statement addressed to the people of Kyrgyzstan.

We are convinced that the Kyrgyz velvet revolution will auspicate the democratic processes and foster formation of law-based state, open society and efficient economy in the brotherly republic.

In this historic moment we wish the people and genuine leaders of Kyrgyzstan unity! We believe you will manage to quickly consolidate the society and ensure lawful democratic transformation.

We are proud of your victory and we wish you every success! We are with you!

Respublika Weekly collects comments from politicians (opposition ones, by the look of it).

Zamanbek Nurkadilov:
The Oriental mentality has become apparent in this case. The people’s anger is able to sweep away tyranny in a flash. I don’t urge to repeat the Kyrgyz scenario, but one should understand that it is impossible to test the people’s patience endlessly! I would recommend Nazarbayev to hold elections and to quit running for presidency this time. It is not late to start dialogue.
