IHT/NYT: Drop Karimov

by Laurence on 5/30/2005 · 2 comments

This NYT editorial in today’s International Herald Tribune, titled China honors a friend, calls on the US to drop support for Uzbekistan, including military aid.

IMHO the NY Times’ recommended policy might be seen as a victory for terrorists (a campaign of bombings and riots in Uzbekistan leading to a US pullout), signalling a military and political defeat for America at very low cost to Osama Bin Laden as well as his Taliban and IMU supporters (a few hundred dead).

If there was some evidence that Osama, the Taliban, and the IMU were involved them maybe I would find this slightly possible.

I don’t think we should disengage, but I also don’t think Uzbekistan should get away with dismissing economic dissatisfaction as a result of its policies as Islamic extremism without any evidence.

I don’t think so, Laurence. No attacks on Khanabad.
