Beirut’s Daily Star: Put Karimov at Arm’s Length

by Laurence on 5/31/2005

Charles V. Pena’s op-ed for the Beirut newspaper is titled In Uzbekistan, Washington should side with no one. He doesn’t call for regime change:

A better course of action would be to adopt a policy that places Uzbekistan at arm’s length. Such an approach would signal a return to traditional diplomacy that prescribes neither siding with corrupt leaders against their populaces, nor working with domestic groups against a given regime. There is simply no need for the United States to either prop up Karimov or to seek his overthrow. Protecting him threatens to alienate more segments of the world’s Muslim population; seeking his overthrow could create a situation that is worse for American interests – witness regime change in Iraq.
