Human Rights Activist Accuses Karimov of Staging Andijan Uprising

From a BBC Monitoring transcript on Monters and

Prominent Uzbek human rights activist Tolib Yoqubov has said the unrest in Andijon on 13 May was staged by the Uzbek government itself. Interviewed by Iranian radio, he also said that Russia’s and USA’s initial support for the Uzbek government’s steps to quell the unrest by force was due to the fact that these countries were striving for greater influence in Central Asia and were “trying to win over” Uzbek President Islom Karimov.

The involvement of Iran in this charge is interesting, given the state of Persian-US relations and the Iranian election . . .
