Azerbaijan Updates

by Nathan Hamm on 8/15/2005

Though I certainly have valid excuses, I have been remiss in not posting more news on the political situation in Azerbaijan. Thankfully, there are plenty of others out there picking up my slack.

Marianna has her latest parliamentary election roundup online covering August 8-14. It’s a great place for a summary of what’s been going on the past week.

Volodymyr Campaign reports that Yeni Fikir has a new address.

Blogrel has a small roundup of Azerbaijan news as well as an excerpt from a TV interview with Yeni Fikir’s Ruslan Bashirli.

EurasiaNet carries a good article on how Bashirli’s arrest and the crackdown on the opposition is fueling political tension. And RFE/RL reports that the Azeri government is threatening to arrest two prominent political exiles if they return to take part in the parliamentary election.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that RFE/RL reports that Azeri officials are repeating charges that the opposition plans to come to power through force.
