Nodira Khidoyatova Arrested

Another member of Sunshine Uzbekistan, Nodira Khidoyatova, has been arrested. Sunshine Uzbekistan’s blog has a good summary compiled from various reports. She was picked up after clearing customs at the Tashkent airport on charges concerning tax evasion by her company.

Ozod Dekhkonlar leader Nigara Khidoyatova, Nadira’s sister, was waiting for her in the terminal. “When at 1 a.m. Nadira did not appear among other passengers of the Moscow-Tashkent flight, I immediately called the Prosecutor General’s Office,” she said. “Ramazan Pulatov, detective of the Corruption Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office, informed me that Nadira had been arrested in the light of the criminal charges pressed against her. The matter concerns tax-evasion on the part of Nadira’s company. The prosecutor’s office ordered her arrest.”

“As a matter of fact, Pulatov warned me to be careful too because “things may happen” – that was how he put it,” Khidoyatova said.

According to her sister, Nadira Khidoyatova is currently at the detention cell of the Tashkent Municipal Directorate of Internal Affairs. No charges were brought against her, or arrest warrant shown. also reports in the story that Nodira was arrested for tax evasion in the early 90’s and was only released after President Karimov was denied a meeting with Bill Clinton while in the United States.
