Wolesi Jirga Speaker Haji Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi

by Sekundar on 2/28/2011

Yessir, not Sayyaf, and not Qanuni again. Ibrahimi, a 50 year-old Uzbek from Kunduz, has been elected speaker of the lower house of Afghanistan’s parliament (AIP). The Afghan Analysts Network has already done a fine job going over the election here, so I won’t rehash the details. Ibrahimi, a de-Dostumized Uzbek landed gentleman-with-armed-retainers, seems a man with valuable lands on the border, construction companies in the cities, and important connections. But, being a former HiG commander, I wonder if Hekmatyar is a step closer to coming in (or losing more of his followers).
