Something to watch out for

After returning from Swat, I plan on focusing more on a topic that I have discussed in length on previously. The Baloch insurgency is a topic that analysts and military thinkers will focus more on in the coming years because of the continously deteriorating situation in Pakistan.

Here are two op-ed’s in The Express Tribune concerning Balochistan that I think will give some sort of understanding to the insurgency.

Here and Here.

I plan on conducting a few interviews with residents of Balochistan including government officials and politicians. So check back on in the coming weeks, there will be some interesting issues to read up on… guaranteed.

I started thinking about this a couple years ago when the development of the port of Gwadar came on my radar. The Chinese have thrown a lot of money into both developing a deep water port there, and developing the rail/road transit through Pakistan to Western China. This would give Western China a more economically efficient outlet for goods if it followed the development trends in Eastern China, (which may or may not happen, hard to say). Then there’s the pipeline access from Central Asia (not an immediate, with AF still a clusterf***), and the usefulness for Pakistan of having a major port not easily blockaded by India (like Karachi is). Any one of these issues coming to prominence would thrust the Baloch insurgents into the lime light significantly more than what they are now.

There actually isn’t that much written about the Baloch question yet, probably because it hasn’t had a visible impact on the West. It’ll take time to change that.
