Georgian Windows

Microsoft is putting out a Georgian version of Windows.

“It is very important for us that the world’s leading company in the sphere of computer technologies is working over the development of a Georgian version of the Windows operational system,” said Mikhail Saakashvili.

“This means that any Georgian citizen possessing a PC will be able to work with the Windows system not in English but in his or her native tongue, which is a major relief making personal computers more accessible,” said the president.

Come now… I’m sure they’d all been using bootleg Russian copies.

I hope that their marketing campaign is thoroughly researched and avoids Russification. An example of poor cultural marketing techniques was committed by Berlitz, the language folks. I own a copy of a Russian language tape which features on its cover an uncredited painting by the Georgian artist, Pirosamani. When I notified the publisher in New York of the error, I was told that they were aware of their actions, but that the artwork cost was “within their budget” and they didn’t think the general public would notice!
