Jonathan P points out this story on Tashkent roadwork as a follow up to yesterday’s story.
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a resolution “On further measures to improve organisation of road construction in cities” on 27 April.
The document criticised administrations of regions and Tashkent city for construction of roads and buildings and reconstruction of monuments with violation of town planning requirements and without project documentations.
The resolution said that Cabinet of Ministers is not controlling implementation of town planning legislation and decree of president “On measures for further development of architecture and town-planning in Uzbekistan” dated 26 April 2000.

It said that new construction, reconstruction and modernisation of transport infrastructure with optimisation of transport magistral schemes and system would be carried out only with adoption of general plans of cities in established order and with agreement of the State Architecture and Construction Committee of Uzbekistan.
The report goes on to say that the committee heading up modernization and reconstruction would develop a plan for Tashkent’s transportation infrastructure within three months. It sounds like work is already underway.

This from mosnews.com regarding the new motorcycle ban and the changes to the roads:
“… signs appeared outlawing motorbikes in March. Some main streets near government buildings in Tashkent have also undergone rapid renovations this month apparently to reduce traffic.
The police spokesman said no announcement had been made earlier about the motorbike ban because it was a “secret order”. …”
