Washington Post: Uzbek Crackdown Threatens Base

by Laurence on 6/4/2005

In an article headlined Crackdown Muddies U.S.-Uzbek Relations, Anne Scott Tyson and Robin Wright quote US State Department and Pentagon officials, as well as senators, to the effect that the Andijan killings may result in the closure of US bases in Uzbekistan due to human rights considerations and the dangers of civil war. Money quote:

“No one wants our troops in the middle of someone else’s civil conflict or issues,” the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the negotiations.

This statement pretty clearly announces an end to the US-Uzbek “strategic partnership,” IMHO.
