Blair Wants Tougher Sanctions on Uzbekistan
by Nathan Hamm on 5/10/2006
Tony Blair said that he wants tougher sanctions on Uzbekistan.
Blair said Britain will try to strengthen punitive measures already in place against Uzbekistan — including an EU arms embargo and a visa ban on Uzbek officials thought to be responsible for last year’s military crackdown in Andijon.
With RFE/RL the only agency reporting on this at the moment, there are no details on what Blair specifically has in mind or whether or not he means that Britain will try to strengthen EU sanctions or implement stronger UK sanctions against Uzbekistan. I could find no details onthe handful of UK government websites I checked either. (Though this was admittedly difficult given all the unnecessary additional letters inserted into words…)
Be sure to also check out James’s summary of the CEIP Andijon conference.
