Ms. Priest devotes a chapter to a detachment of SOF in a tribal area in northern Nigeria, training the Nigerian army. We didn't invade, and we didn't attempt to "nation-build" beyond training the same army that went right down to the delta area and promptly slaughtered thousands of rebelling tribesmen.

question: when were we involved in Nigeria? I mean, I don't doubt it -- oil, a certain amount of instability, and a political system we don't comprehend -- but I'm wracking my brains and I can't think of any *reported* US military adventures there. Maybe it was before my time (I'm an 1985 baby)?

D, I think you're also misunderstanding this review. While "The Mission" covers areas beyond Central Asia, there is a chapter in it devoted especially to American ham-handedness in the late 90's in "the stans" (and multiple chapters devoted to Afghanistan). Furthermore, a broad picture of the over-militarization of American foreign policy surely can inform a view of American actions and strategy in the region as a whole.

Josh posts his stuff both places a lot of the time, especially if it's not specifically about Central Asia.

I wish I had more time and could post more often, but it is the way it is. I have to put my day job and my home life first.

I especially wish that more of the contributors who I've brought on had stuck with it...

Geography:
JF correctly posts "Bhutto, Blasts, and Bellydancing
Filed under: South Asia — Joshua Foust at 5:06 pm on Monday, October 29, 2007" on his Conjecturer blog, note: SOUTH Asia
And in the bio he says "He [JF] is an editor at The Registan, a blog devoted to Central Asian events."
So why double post a SOUTH Asian topic on a CENTRAL Asian blog?
In fact there is so much double-posting going on, maybe Registan is Conecturer and vice versa? It's all really confusing, possibly lazy. I'm sure this book review (which has feck all to do with Central Asia, even less than Nordstream) was somewhere else: http://conjecturer.com/weblog/
This is a critical time in Central Asia and Registan is arsing about with meandering, second hand copy? Boo.
