A personal note

I’m glad to announce that I [Michael Hancock, a Book Reviewer here at Registan] will be attending Christian’s Alma Mater, Indiana University, in the Fall.  You might know Christian from the late, great blog Afghanistanica.  The Bloomington Campus is home to the Department of Central Eurasian Studies, where I’ll be attempting to increase my understanding of the region and languages.  I hope that this will bode well for Registan.net, since I’ll have better tabs on Central Asia than I do sitting in Ann Arbor teaching English.

I will return with a book review ASAP, but I wanted to share my good news with the community of people whose first words aren’t, “What?  I’m sorry, could you repeat that?  What will you be studying?”  And here I thought anyone would be interested to hear about Indiana’s ‘Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center.”  I suppose graduate school is where you go to learn the meaning of the word “eclectic.”

Michael earned an MA in Central Eurasian Studies in 2011 and remains a student at Indiana University pursuing a dual PhD in Russian History and Central Eurasian Studies. He served 6 months in the Peace Corps in Uzbekistan in 2005. After the events in Andijan and the subsequent closure of the program, he served 2 years in southern Kazakhstan, returning to the Midwest in 2007. His general area of interest is on post-Timur Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, centered on the Syr Darya river valley.

Congrats! Having spent 3.5 years there on a CEUS/MPA degree, I think you’re making a good choice. Have fun.

Congrats! Makes me wish I were back at the grad school stage all over again (how many degrees can one person reasonably have??). Keep sharing what you learn and what you think of it.

Having met the director of the Center, I can say it’s an awesome program and the place to be for people interested in seriously working on Central Asia. Congrats.

Thanks for all the words of support!

Now I just have to find a way to pay for it. I’m afraid I wasn’t awarded a FLAS Fellowship, so I’ll be working for my schooling. No worries about work, just about finding the job or assistantship to cover tuition, room & board. Anyone need ditches dug in and around the Greater Bloomington Area?

“Anyone need ditches dug in and around the Greater Bloomington Area?”

I wouldn’t venture too far from the safety of downtown Bloomington. Especially not as far as the Walmart on the far eastside. You’ve been warned.
