Steve Coll’s blog at The New Yorker is required reading—given his decades of experience in South Asia and Afghanistan (and his excellent book Ghost Wars), the man routinely puts forth legitimate wisdom about the area. But this post of his was pretty amusing: after recounting the pages upon pages of headlines in Dawn about murders, car bombings, kidnappings, terrorism, and so on, Coll wonders, “Surely an adorable zoo animal gave birth somewhere, people.”
Well, I mean Pakistan isn’t exactly Knut. Even so, that’s pretty funny! In a related note, has anyone else ever marveled at the outstanding quality of the journalism at The New Yorker? Packer, Coll, Wright, Hersch… to say nothing of their freelancers, are almost all uniformly well written, well researched, and truly insightful.
